In the beginning of the year 1899, he became a father. He was thinking of retiring. Dignified he replied to the personal attacks from minister Lebon in French Politic In Africa.
The latter criticised his administrative inability to supervise and his lack of funding regarding the mission. During the inauguration of a monument dedicated to Francis Garnier, a reporter from the Temps wrote : « As honorable as glorifying dead people is, treating the living people right is even better ».The law of august 1st 1902 rewarded Brazza with a national pension of 10 000 francs adjustable up to 6000 francs for Therese in case of her husband's death and so forth for their children. Such honors hadn't been received since Pasteur in 1874. Brazza was then getting old. His friends were dead : Dolisie in 1899, Ballay in 1902. He lost one of his children and took a break from the Freemasonry. Progressively, the atrocities committed in the French Congo started to resurface thanks to The Congo Reform Association with E. Morel and writers such as Joseph Conrad and Mark Twain.
Brazza learned from the missionaries of the « Saint-Esprit » that the situation in the French Congo was just as bad.
France was discovering the great scandal from Gaud and Toque's case, vigorously denounced by the press.
